What is the Belize Diabetes Association?
The Belize
Diabetes Association, a non-government, non-profit entity has vested itself
with the responsibility of providing support for persons living with Diabetes,
as well as educating the public at large on how to prevent the unset of this
disease. The association is a firm believer that when it comes to Diabetes,
‘prevention is better than cure’, thus advocates a healthy life-style.
The Belize
Diabetes Association was formed in 1990 by a group of professionals and other
persons concerned about diabetes and its complications.
The Association
membership consists of volunteers who dedicate their time to educating the
public and bringing about awareness on the impact of diabetes and its
complications. The Association is governed by a constitution. The executive
council is elected every three years from within its membership.

Function
The operation of
the Association is financed through membership dues, fundraising, and donation
from friends and business places.
The Association
meets every third Saturday of the month at 4:00pm at the Karl Heusner Memorial
Hospital Conference Room. The meetings are open to everyone, whether living
with diabetes or a supporter.
As a part of its
community and out-reach programs, the association participates in health fairs,
conduct presentations, information sharing and blood sugar monitoring with our
children in schools. Upon request, the association also conducts presentation
and blood sugar testing to companies and business houses.
At the meetings,
health care professionals make presentations on specific condition as it
relates to diabetes.
International affiliation
The Association
is an affiliate of the International Diabetes Federation
(IDF). IDF divides its associated member
countries into regions. Belize
is a part of the North American Region and the Caribbean.
(NARC) These territories comprises of Canada,
the United States of America
and most of the Caribbean
Islands. The Bahamas and Bermuda
are also included. NARC meets twice
annually, in the months of March and October. The March meetings usually
coincide with the annual UDOP Diabetes Conference held in Jamaica. The location of the
October meetings is rotated among the member territories. The NARC October 2009
meeting will be held in Montreal,
Canada on
October 17, a day prior to the opening of the congress.
As a member in
good standing (pays annual dues) The Belize Diabetes Association attends IDF
congress which are held every three years.
The 20th World Diabetes Congress will be held in Montreal, Canada
from October 18 to 23, 2009 at which Belize will have four official
representatives. Ms. Clara Gentle aka
Joyce Flowers, Program Organizer along with Ms. Barbara Johnston Treasurer will
be the two delegates who will vote on behalf of Belize. Mr. Anthony Castillo,
President and Ms. Sharon Fraser, Vice President are invited speakers at the
Congress.
